WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS? WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU?

Opinion of the Best Cataract Surgeon in Mumbai

Cataract treatment involves removing the clouded cataractous lens using the appropriate technique and replacing it with an artificial clear Intraocular Lens (IOL). It is a daycare procedure requiring no prior hospital admission. The surgery takes a few minutes and the patient is discharged the very same day. There is NO medical treatment that can cure a cataract nor is there any treatment to prevent its progression. Cataract surgery is the only treatment option to restore visual function. Said that we are glad to have the Best Cataract Surgeon in Mumbai. Cataract extraction by Phacoemulsification followed by implantation of an Intraocular lens is the standard of care worldwide at present. From Extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) and Small incision cataract surgery (SICS), surgical technique has evolved to Phacoemulsification by Micro-incision cataract surgery (MICS) and now to Bladeless or Femtosecond cataract surgery. Consult with the best cataract surgeon in Mumbai at Rushabh Eye Hospital & Laser Centre.

TYPES OF CATARACT SURGERY

1) SICS: Small incision cataract surgery

This is a technique of cataract surgery where a 6-7 mm incision is made and the cataract is removed as a whole by the surgeon. The IOL of choice is then placed in the eye and the wound is sealed. No stitches are required in this procedure and the healing time is quick.

2) Phacoemulsification (Phaco)

This is the modern cataract removal surgical technique which is performed through a very small 2-3 mm incision. An ultrasonic probe is inserted into the eye which breaks (emulsifies) the cloudy lens into tiny pieces and gently removes it. A Foldable IOL ins then inserted which opens up like a flower when inside. No stitches are used and the incision is self-healing. Using advanced surgical techniques of Phacoemulsification, the removal of the cataract is a safe, painless, and straightforward process.

3) Bladeless Cataract Treatment

Cataract surgery is performed in two stages. First a femtosecond laser makes cuts in the cornea, lens capsule, and lens itself, based on surgeon preference. Then the cataract surgery is performed using the standard Phacoemulsification system. The only difference between conventional and femtosecond cataract surgery is the use of a laser to make incisions, capsulotomy and lens fragmentation, thus naming it ‘bladeless’. However, this so-called robotic cataract surgery also requires an experienced cataract surgeon and the Phacoemulsification system remains the same.

WHAT IS BLADELESS ROBOTIC CATARACT SURGERY? DOES IT REALLY OFFER ANY ADDITIONAL BENEFIT?

Bladeless Cataract surgery also known as Femto Cataract Surgery is a technique where the incision and few other steps are performed using a femtosecond laser and then the cataract is removed by the phacoemulsification probe. Femtosecond cataract, also promoted as Robotic Cataract Surgery in Mumbai, is a misnomer as it’s a laser operated by the surgeon which performs steps of the surgery. Although it is claimed that bladeless cataract surgery is superior to conventional Phacoemulsification, visual outcomes in the hands of an experienced surgeon remain exactly the same. There is no difference in the risk of serious complications during surgery for both techniques. The quality of vision after cataract surgery depends more on the type of intraocular lens implant chosen and how the surgery is performed. At Rushabh Eye Hospital & Laser Centre, our eye surgeons have over 30 years of experience in handling all kinds of complex cataract cases, so you can rest assured that you are in safe hands. WHY EARLY CATARACT SURGERY IS POSSIBLE?

Vision with cataracts causes blurred vision, distorted images, haloes around light, etc.  Advanced cataracts may cause a complete blackout of vision.  We usually do not wait for any more for cataracts to ripen, since the newer techniques of removal are laser-based. In the olden days, manual techniques required us to wait so the cataract would become hard and would be easy to hook out from the eye from large incisions which then required to be stitched.  Healing was slow and unpredictable. These days, phacoemulsification cataract surgeries have changed the scenario. The incisions are hardly 3 mm in size and require no stitches. The healing is quick and results extremely predictable. The cataract can be removed at any stage but requires more laser energy to break down the harder cataracts, which may occasionally delay healing. Hence, we no longer advise patients to postpone surgery.  Once diagnosed with a cataract, you can plan the surgery as per your logistics at an early stage itself.  Your search for” Best cataract surgeon in Mumbai” ends here. Truly a life-changing experience after surgery by the best cataract surgeon at Rushabh Eye Hospital!
